Off the Grand Lobby is the foyer just outside the auditorium proper. This area is divided by a wall with windows of stained etched glass in samll rectangles of blue-green with a yellow diamond super-imposed on a red one. Five openings lead from the foyer to the auditorium, a gigantic expanse originally housing two thousand, nine hundred thirty eight seats. Some of these original seats were removed in the 1970's. The walls represent an atrium of an Italian villa with small balconies and niches for statuary. Golden-colored stucco walls are enhanced by the sane swirling columns found in the Grand Lobby. Side alcoves at the front of the auditorium depict in detail some specific forms of Italian Renaissance architecture: the rounded archways divided by a shaft with a rose and acanthus leaf design continued in teh capital and repeated throughout the theatre. |
